Yellow Form=Mandatory Condition of Employment

As of the October 15th deadline, only 20% of faculty have returned the yellow forms that were distributed in all Brooklyn campus mailboxes in September.  Of some 700+ contacts made, meaning, the stuffing of — at a minimum — 700 plus Pratt Brooklyn mailboxes w/an information packet including the 2007-2011 CBA, there have been just 152 responses (107 UFCT bargaining unit members wishing to remain union members, 40 newly enrolled union members and just 5 opting for being agency fee payers). So what now?

For Union Members:

If you are at present a dues paying union member, the UFCT will assume that you wish no change in your membership status; to retain your current "remain a union member in good standing" status (option #1 on the yellow sheet). Therefore we ask that you simply return — if such materials still exist — all 'unmarked' enrollment forms and any duplicate contracts you might have received. In other words, you have made your choice by not choosing otherwise.

For Non-Members:

THIS IS A SECOND CHANCE! SHOULD YOU NOT RESPOND, THE UFCT WILL HAVE TO NOTIFY THE PRATT ADMINISTRATION OF YOUR NON-COMPLIANCE WHICH WILL PUT YOUR REAPPOINTMENT FOR NEXT SEMESTER AT RISK. IF YOU HAVE MISPLACED OR LOST ANY OF THE DISTRIBUTED ENROLLMENT MATERIALS, PLEASE CONTACT THE UFCT OFFICE IMMEDIATELY (125 NORTH HALL, 718-636-3614.)

The benefits of union membership are:

1.                   the right to hold union office;

2.                   the right to participate in union governance, vote in union elections and attend union meetings;

3.                   the right to have input regarding collective bargaining proposals and;

4.                   the right to ratify collective bargaining agreements.

Should you choose not to belong to the union, be aware that you will be required to pay an agency fee equivalent to the amount of dues paid by union members. Moreover, be advised that if you choose to be a non-member you have the right to object to the payment of agency fees which are expended for purposes other than contract administration, grievance adjustment and collective bargaining, and would be due a rebate for such ‘non-chargeable’ expenses. A procedure to process one’s objection will be sent to the agency fee payer in the late spring 2009 semester. Agency fee payers must apply for, and strictly follow, the rebate procedure at the time of notification.

ALL PRATT FACULTY: YELLOW FORMS DUE BY OCTOBER 15

By this time, all Pratt faculty should have received a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and membership materials in their faculty mailboxes.  Whether or not you are currently a union member, you must fill out the yellow membership form and return it to the union office (125 North Hall) by October 15.  Filling out the form is a mandatory condition of your employment.  Please call the union office (718-636-3614) if you have not received this material.

October 1, Meeting Minutes

Dear faculty,

Here is a summary of the topics discussed at yesterday's meeting:

1.  The next general membership meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 5 from 12:30-1:45 in 110 Engineering.  A representative from our parent union, NYSUT, will be present to discuss all the benefits of union membership.

2.  Currently faculty stats were reviewed, and several very positive trends were noted: the number of faculty with a CCE has increased significantly (currently the number is 82; 5 years ago, it was 38) and that taking into account that a number of faculty with a CCE have since gotten full-time positions or retired.  Tenure at Pratt continues to strengthen, against the national trend towards eliminating or weakening  tenure.  In addition, the number of visiting faculty has dipped below 500 for the first time in 5 years, clearly demonstrating that the reliance on very contingent faculty (those who teach only one course) is decreasing.

3.  Most time was spent discussing the new proposed structure of the part-time faculty track, a proposal that resulted from year-long discussions between a union team and the administration (the "Joint Committee on the Visiting Status").  The next step for this proposal to be passed is for a joint presentation between the administration and the union to take place sometime during the Fall semester.

4.  All faculty, whether or not they are union members, must fill out the yellow form which accompanied the new contract/CBA, all of which were distributed in faculty mailboxes (Manhattan mailboxes to be stuffed in the coming week).  On the yellow form, you check whether you want to continue your union membership (if already a member), if you want to join the union, or if you elect to pay an agency fee.  Those who elect the agency fee must apply for a rebate of that portion of the dues allocated by the parent union to political activities (instructions for how to apply for a rebate will be distributed in the spring, at the end of the parent union's fiscal year).

Sincerely,

Suzanne Verderber
